Movie review – Ok Jaanu – A decent watch

Ok Jaanu is a remake of the Tamil film O kaadhal Kanmani which was directed by Mani Ratnam. This film is directed by Shaad Ali, starring Aditya Roy Kapur as Aditya and Shraddha Kapoor as Tara. Leela Samson reprised the same role as that in the Tamil version.  Naseeruddin Shah played the role of her husband.

The story and narrative of the film was same with minor changes. The film lacked the impact and chemistry of the actors, which was very well portrayed by the Tamil actors in the original. A lot of scenes were funny and cute, but was flat as there was nothing so Wow about it.  In terms of acting Aditya Roy Kapur was good with his spontaneity, which gave substance to the role. Shraddha Kapoor was looking quite stylish and bold but was not able to bring out her best in this role.

Now coming to the technical elements of the film. The film was visually  well made. I was quite impressed with the Cinematography, certain scenes just lit up on screen because of the way it was shot. Each scene had a lot of depth, which was important to bring out especially when you can not experiment much with the story. I learnt how a simple scene could look so spectacular through the lenses. The editing could have been a lot more crisp. I found some scenes changing quite fast and abruptly especially the Humma Song. The song began rather quickly which was quite odd. There was no build up to the song at all.

The music was pretty average . Apart from the common songs which were there , there was hardly any impact. I didn’t quite like any of the songs to be honest. I felt like listening to the original instead. Initially I did not like the Humma song as remaking a classic song was not the order of the day, but as we see today every third guy is remaking an old song for either a movie or as an standalone single.

Overall the movie had certain moments which were nice but it did not live up to the original film as per my expectations. It would definitely be a nice change for audiences who haven’t watched the Tamil version, but in my opinion this is a one time watch.
